Portraits of animals in various drawing and painting media.

Animal portraits can be challenging to do, but do them well and you and others can be delighted by the results. When the portrait below was given to this dogs ‘Mum’ she burst into happy tears. An animal portrait can be a long lasting reminder of the animals character and if it’s a famly pet, a love shared.

By restricting the image to mainly concentrate on the animals head the ‘eye contact’ becomes a key focus of the image. Building up realistic fur, and keeping the structure of the animals form are key. Making the background simple so it does not distract too much from the main character also helps, but each project will have its unique challenges. On this course, Jason, your tutor, will show you a series of useful drawing and painting tips to make the process of creating an animal portrait easier, as well as breaking down the structure of the creatures facial features and body form. You can use any drawing or painting medium to create your portrait. Jason will be there, every step of the way, to help you tune your art.
