Contemporary Portraits Using Various Media

Some of the most striking contemporary painting seen on social media in the last few years have been portraits.They have blended realism with abstraction using various inventive applications of paint to make the images look loose, spirited and dynamic. This course looks a ways to interpret faces using water soluble oils, watercolour, gouache, acrylics and mixed media. You can choose the medium that best suits you. Jason will be demonstrating approaches using all of the mediums listed above.

Don’t panic! For those new to portaiture Jason will help you gain the basic painting skills required of the medium you are using.

You choose the pace you want to push into the experimental. No – one will be under pressure to move away from realism. The course is aimed to be a fun look at a few different methods of painting faces. Some methods may appeal. Others may leave you cold. You respond to what interests you. You can even explore combining drawing and painting media: watercolours, gouache, acrylic inks and coloured pencils. Jason will be always there to help and advise and provide a demonstration when it’s needed.

This course is aimed at helping you see portrait painting as a creative art form, flexible to interpretation, offering practical ways to paint and draw in a less traditional, more experimental ways while still acheiving a likeness.

What do you need to bring ?

You will need to bring your chosen painting medium plus some tracing paper, a drawing board, water pots and something to cover your table to stop it getting marked with paint.
