Novel ways to use watercolour and mixed media – Projects – Stage by stage.

Watercolour can work well with a surprizing range of media including inks of all kinds, oil pastels, gouache, most drawing tools and even pastels. For example in ‘Fish on a plate,’ seen below, was created using watercolour with quink ink and a dip pen, a clear candle, pearlized oil pastels and watercolour pencils.

This semi abstract still life was created using a combination of watercolour, acrylic inks, oil pastels and gouache

Artists can sometimes feel constrained by watercolor, feeling they must fall into the conventional ‘pure’ watercolour thinking. This course intends to help you free yourself of this ‘ one medium only’ mentality and help you enjoy combining media and feel good about the results. To help you achieve this Jason will take you through a series of projects that help you see how you can combine mediums and layer up your images. The intention of the course is to help you become a more effective and flexible picture planner, becoming bolder and braver, trying new combinations of drawing and painting materials while exploring new stylistic approaches to picture making.

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as a painter ?

Using mixed media can be a liberating experience, but it can also be frustrating if you are unsure of how to best layer up your images. Following projects set by Jason is intended to help you get a more rounded picture of the handling properties of various drawing and painting materials. The projects will be varied and will provide you with several exciting ideas to explore in your own picture making.

What will you do on the course ?

  • Explore various drawing materials and tools handling qualities
  • Set down established layering norms with mixed media
  • Explore layerieng up images following Jason’s projects set
  • Discuss potential projects and creating ordered lists to help you plan the layering.
  • Work on your own project with help and guidance from the tutor and the other members of the class.

What do you need to bring ?

You will need to bring your usual watercolour painting equipment to class, and a bottle of black and also white ink plus a drawing dip pen.

Don’t worry about having all kinds of drawing and painting materials. Jason will often be able to provide some of the materials required if you don’t have them yourself. You will be informed ahead of time of the materials required for each new project. This is important because you want to keep your kit as light as possible and not feel inclined to bring in all of your art materials with you to each class.
