Inspired by Venice – Watercolours and other media

Venice is stunning. It’s been the inspiration for some beautiful painting and drawings by many great artists including Turner and Singer Sargent and Whistler. On this course you will be shown a variety of methods used by past and present masters to capture the look and spirit of the city as well as focusing on creating your own individual Venetian paintings and drawings in your chosen media.

Jason will also help you choose the right image to work from and talk through your aims and painting strategies to complete your art. He will offer advice on how best to set out your image, unpick any troublesome perspective, advise on colour choices and help you take your art to a satisfying conclusion by discussing which details deserve greatest focus and where you might soften some sections to make a more visually pleasing image.

We may not be ‘on location’ in Venice, the course is studio based at The Hearth, but it should still prove a magical escape from the everyday.

You may simply want to create a series of sketches to build up a portfolio of images representing the city from various locations. That’s fine. How you interpret Venice is up to you. Jason is here to instruct, inspire and guide you towards successful art making.

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as a painter ?

This course will help you render buildings, water, boats and people in watercolours and other media with greater skill. You will gain more understanding of perspective and learn how to edit and to ‘dumb down’ complex scenes so that you can paint them with greater ease. You will also be able to put together a number of visual triggers that help the viewer see Venice through a montage of symbols should you wish to explore more abstracted illustrations of the city.

What will you do on the course ?

  • Examine how to block out a scene, breaking it down into key shapes
  • Gain a greater understanding of how the scene can be constructed with a little more understanding of perspective
  • Explore how motifs can make the viewer see a location in their minds eye without need for accurately rendering a scene
  • Explore bold colour use
  • Create finished paintings of Venice you are proud of

What do you need to bring ?

Jason has a good number of images taken within Venice you can use on the course. These can be found at his website www.studio.jasonskill.com – Simply join studio to gain free use of the images needed for the class.

You will need to bring your usual painting and drawing kit, that you use at home, to class. In addition to this you will need to bring several sheets of kitchen roll, drawing paper and a few sheets of watercolour painting paper to work on.
