Van Gogh has a unique style which makes his art instantly recognisable. It’s vibrant and appealing and loved by millions. Who wouldn’t want a little of that magic to rub off in their own work? Leaning how to replicate Van Gogh’s working methods can transform how you think about handling line and colour. It can even lead to new stylistic developments within your own work. So why not take a closer look at one of the greats in art to gain a deeper appreciation of his art and revolutionary approaches.

We will first take at look at his drawing style using pencil and pen and then explore some of his his painting ideas using one of the following mediums: watercolour, acrylics, water soluble oils or acrylics. You are free to choose the medium that feels right for you. In the later portion of the course we will look at how you can adapt his style to open up different types of drawing and painting so you feel less like a forger and more like a creative inventive artist, adding his stylistic ideas into your own way of working.

Level

This course would suit those who have a little experience of drawing and painting. Done a beginners course.

This course is aimed at enhancing your apprectaion for Van Gogh’s work and seeing new ways to draw and paint that are a side step away from traditional ways for drawing and painting. It should enhance your drawing and painting skills and help you think in new ways about making your art.

What will you do on the course?

• Look at directional line drawing – drawing first with pencil and then with pen mimicing the style of Van Gogh.
• Paint using a similar directional linea approach used within the drawing exercises.
• Copy a Van Gogh or interpret a picture of your own using his style.
• Explore his colour use
• Examine how to take aspects of Van Goghs style and incorperate it into your own drawing methods
• From your experiments within your drawing begin to paint using your new stylistic look.

What do you need to bring ?

At the first lesson you will need to bring just drawing paper, pencil, erasure and sharpener and a black pen.

In subsequent lessons you can use any medium from the following list that you are most familia with.

Acrylics, water soluble oils, gouache, watercolours.

The methods are adaptable to any of these mediums. Please do not buy new materials. Stick with what you are already familia with.
