Capturing movement

Movement is fun and exciting to draw and paint. When early photography began to capture images of movement many painters and sculptors reshaped their work, to reflect their facination with this new way of seeing the world. The Italian futurists, for example, made rendering movement a core driver of their artistic endevours.

Jason, your tutor, has also fallen under it’s spell and has spent countless hours finding ways to embed the feel of movement into various aspects of his art. This makes him the ideal teacher of this subject. He believes that anyone with basic drawing and painting skills can make objects, people, animals and birds look like they are moving once they have been shown some effective approaches. He can even show you how to make a landcape look like it is being blown about by the wind !

Level – suited to those who have some experience of painting . Not recommended for total beginners

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as an artist ?

Looking at how artists render movement can help you see where to focus detail and where you can blur and abstract sections of an artwork. It also helps you see more clearly the importance of making the subject of the work easily readable by the viewer. Rhythmn and movement also go hand in hand. Seeing, even in a small way, how they link within picture making can help lift your work to the next level.

What will you do on the course ?

  • Explore several approaches with watercolour that effectively illustrate movement.
  • Break down photographs of movement into a stage by stage build up of finished images.
  • Create several sketches and at least one finished watercolour .

What will you need to bring ?

Your watercolour painting kit, including: drawing paper, drawing board, palette, water pots, paints, brushes, masking tape, kitchen roll and a pencil and pen, plus a J-cloth / kitchen cloth.

Please bring an image that you feel illustrates movement.

Jason will advise you each week about the materials you will need for the following session. Anyone unable to attend a lesson should contact him by email and he will advise them on the materials needed for the following class.
