PAINTING WATER

If you paint landscapes with watercolour you are very likely to want to hone your water painting skills. Capturing the transparency, reflections, movement and drama of moving water can make or break a painting. This course focuses on the key methods, tricks and skills required to improve how you render water.

Lakes and ponds, pools, babbling brooks and waterfalls will all be looked at.

Jason, your tutor, also feels that it’s important to understand a little of the structure under the water, that helps form the shapes you see on the surface as seen below:

The aim of the course is to inspire you to make your own water scenes with the methods shown

Medium

Students are free to use watercolour, gouache or acrylic. The tutor will be demonstrating predominantly with watercolour.

Level

This course would suit a relative beginner, and the more experienced painter who is looking to tune their painting skills.

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as a painter ?

This course will help you to illustrate water in various conditions – calm and flat, windswept and bumpy, tumbling and bubbling, sparking with light, transparent and murky. This should provide you with a new set of skills that may upgrade your landscape painting.

What will you do on the course ?

  • Paint a lake to that it appears to have depth/ perspective.
  • Look at structuring a waterfall so that you understand the rock forms below the water.
  • Explore directional painting and swirl painting to illustrate fast moving water
  • Create a babbling brook
  • Create your own project work that shows use of the skills learnt on the course

What do you need to bring ?

Please bring your usual watercolour painting kit to the first class. Please note that you will need to bring a drawing board and water pots as these are not provided at the centre.

You will also need to bring drawing paper, a pen and pencil, eraser and sharpener, watercolour paper, or acrylic paper to the first lesson as well as your painting kit.
