Intro to illustration – Making pictures that tell stories

If you have ever wanted to make amusing hand drawn cards for friends and family or perhaps have big dreams of creating a children’s story book, then this is the course for you. Making pictures that tell stories, enhancing any accompanying text is key to starting to think like an illustrator. The images don’t have to be well drawn or beautifully painted. Sometimes a rough sketch might have the right essence of the subject that a more polished image cannot capture.

T shirt design illustration

This course is aimed at anyone who has dabbled a little in art and would like to make their own hand drawn illustrations. On this course we will look first at making simple visuals with text, as seen above, as well as creating a simple character you can easily repeat and develop in a story telling context – as seen with the duck below. We will also explore some commonly used quick drawing and painting methods, used by many illustrators, as well as showing the mechanics of more detailed approaches.  You will also be encouraged to play around with reference material, experiment with creating new images, making some story telling images of your own.

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as a painter ?

Using your artistic gifts to amuse, delight and move others is truly fulfilling. Sometimes artists become over focusseed on making art / pictures that others might admire, because they are well drawn or painted. Art is not always a beautifully crafted thing. Sometimes it’s crude, shocking, individualistic or even crass or tasteless. By stepping through the door and trying to illustrate some notion you have, text, poetry, you could find a different part of your art that is alive, untamed, free and energetic. This course will be fun, entertaining, informative and at times challenging, in a good way,

What will you do on the course ?

  • Experiment with placing images and words together to ‘match’ in meaning.
  • Explore various illustrative approaches used my professional illustrators.
  • Taking first sketch notions to more finished material
  • Create an easily drawn character to play with in different locations and scenarios.
  • Gather useful reference material to help you create cohesive work.
  • Create a finished illustration
