Modern ‘ one stroke’ watercolours

This course looks at blending traditional ‘one stroke’ gestural painting approaches, seen in the watercolour and ink art of China, Japan and Korea, with modern western methods of watercolour painting. The aim is to make fresh, stark, striking artworks that are visually appealing, quick to create and fun to do.

Some of the ‘one stroke’ approach relies on capuring the essentials of a scene or object so you to recognise it and accept is as ‘right’ in your mind. Working out what is essencial and what’s not will be at the root of the course as well as increasing your confidence with bold direct handing of brushes.

We will start with landscape images, similar to those seen above, but will then explore rendering a wide range of imagery including flowers, animals and figures. The overall aim of the coure is to make you a bolder, more confident artist while having loads of fun making work.
