Fun flowers painting with watercolour – Stage by Stage

Some people are drawn to creating botanical studies which aim to capture every detail, while others love to be more exuberant, fresh and free in their interpretations, capturing more of the essence of the flowers in paint. This course is more reflective of the second approach seen in the watercolours below.

Jason will lead you through a few different approaches to flower painting with watercolour helping you see how an image may be built up layer on layer into a finished artwork. He will also help you construct your own paintings using some of the ideas shown on the course.

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as a painter ?

Flower painting is one oif the areas of painting where you can let rip with colour. You have to rethink your approaches to colour mixing with a ‘no dirty mixes’ approach to keep the colours really vibrant. It’s also an area of art where you may have to plan quite carefully how you structure the image in layers. So you have to think your actions through carefully then be flowing and gestural with your mark making to reflect the flower forms which sometimes feels like a contradiction in approach. In other words this is a quite unique painting area that has much to teach anyone who explores it.

What will you do on the course ?

  • Look at how to handle the brush to make shapes that reflect flower forms
  • Examine how other artists have rendered flowers – what can we learn from it ?
  • Explore dissolving forms while still retaining the overall feel of the plant.
  • Ideas for making backgrounds
  • Using masking fluid to stop out whites.
  • Breaking down an image into logical layers
  • Create finished flower painting exercises
  • Create your own finished flower painting
